The Management Board of Matica Srpska passed a resolution on publishing the Journal of Classical Studies of Matica Srpska (Zbornik Matice srpske za klasične studije) at its 4th meeting on the 11th of March 1996.

The Journal focuses on studying the classical antiquities in all aspects. The classical period is the core of European civilization and culture, and our country and the Serbian people are an integral part of that cultural area of the classical era. Many achievements of the classical period in culture, philosophy and science, languages, literature, history, art and material culture were handed down to future European and other nations by the Ancient Balkans. As stated by our leading authority on the Balkans of the classical period, Academician Milan Budimir, the Balkan Slavs as well as all other citizens of former Yugoslavia had strong ties with the culture of the classical period, its location as well as representatives of the era.

“That antique influence and classical heritage, as well as the heritage and reception of the classical period in the Serbian nation are least mentioned in the world. Thus the primary objective of the journal is the contribution to the promotion of our classical science abroad. To this end are the contributions of colleagues from Europe, Russia, the USA, Canada and India published in our journal.”

The Journal is to cover critical acclamation and presentation of works of our scientists and authors dealing with classical topics. This is the reason why the reception of Hellenic philosophy, literature, art and culture, both Greek and Roman, in Serbian tradition will be one of the major topics. Comparative research of religion and myth along with theoretical definition of this sphere are further interests of our international partners, including law and natural sciences of the classical period.

Apart from original research studies and articles on classical topics, the Journal publishes proceedings from scientific conferences on the classical period in our country and abroad, relations with the Orient, classical heritage in Byzantium, interrelations with the Slavic World and Serbian language and culture.

The Journal also features permanent sections like Hronika naučnog života (the Chronicle of Scientific Life), Projekti (Projects), Vesti iz sveta (News from the World), Nekrolozi (Necrologies) and so forth.

Special attention is devoted in the Journal to scientific criticism and presentation of new books and studies published in our country as well as abroad, thus publications of the most important publishers have been provided.

We would like to point out that this Journal is the only one of its kind and has appeared rather late, bearing in mind that the Yugoslav journal on classical topics was lost with the secession of former Yugoslav republics. Precious support to our Journal was given by the International Federation of the Societies of Classical Studies FIEC at its General Assembly on the 20th of August 1999, in Kavala (Greece), when the president of FIEC, Academician Carl Joachim Classen, member of Matica Srpska, publicly supported the publishing of the Journal of Classical Studies and invited colleagues to cooperate with the Journal. We would like to emphasize that FIEC is one of thirteen UNESCO associations for social sciences. Papers from our Journal enter the leading bibliographical publication in the world in this field L’Année Philologique.

The Journal is edited by an international editorial board comprised of the most esteemed scientists at home and abroad.

One of the author's principal aims in this paper has been to ascertain and explain some key questions of the generic and structural features of classicist poetry in general. In attempting to achieve his objective the author first discusses certain hybrid terminological definitions pertaining to the genre, and then concentrates on an analysis of the topographical diversity of the title of a specific poetical form of the Serbian classicist poet Jovan Hadžić. This is important as the external elements (the title and motto) often denote a poem's generic strucuture, namely the principles and models on which the text itself was based. In this particular example, the poem number XIV, written in Vienna in 1824 entitled Ekloga ili pastirska pesma (An Eclogue or a Pastoral Song) from the first volume of Dela (Works) by Jovan Hadžić, has been chosen. The poem contains a motto, borrowed drom one of Horace's Odes, as well as a reference to the two participants in the dialoque, Obrad and Zlatoje. However, contrary to what the educated readership familiar with the conventions of the classical bucolic literature, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, might have expected after a few introductory verses, the central and most important part of the eclogue, it is shown, is not only to bucolic but also of a more general nature. This is exemplified in the scene in which a passenger coming from a long journey is met and a warm welcome is extended to him in the form of a welcoming oration. It means that the genre of this "pastoral poem" may be established in a different kind of way. In order to arrive at a more appropriate generic distinction for this eclogue the author resorts to the theory of classical genera, based on the ex materia vel obiecto ('according to the theme and subject') classification which was applied equally to poetry and prose, relying at the same time on the theory of literary "genres" and "kinds" as these various kinds originated in the process of literary categorization according to the historically deermined form. This methodological approach leads the author on to conclude that the motto in classicist poetry often defines the genre and, in particular, generic categorization, i.e. the one according to the theme and subject. This claim is supported by an analysis of the "generic" relationship between the poem and the preceding motto in Hadžić's two other poems written also according to the prescriptive poetic standard of the age. One of them iz Plač za Pavlom Berićem (A Lament for Pavle Berić) written in the form of an epicedium (a funeral ode spoken shortly before the burial, when the deceased was a private person), and the other is Oda imenu Miloš )An Ode on the Name Miloš), a heroic praise of the virtues of the three notable personalities of this name in Serbian history. Having established the fact that the Latin motto, more or less directly, points to, nay defines the generic category and the character of the poem in the case of the Serbian classicist writer, the author concludes that the motto of Hadžić's eclogue, which reads: I. secundo omine (Go, under the lucky star!), generically comes under the head of the propemptikon, i.e. an address to the prassenger who is about to leave, although the main part of the eclogueis predominantly in the form of the prosphonetikon, i.e. a welcoming oration. In this case, as has been pointed out, the principle of generic mixture (Contamination) of affiliated or complementary kinds of poetic welcoming addresses was made use of. And it is certain that the Serbian poet could have relied on similar models and reproduce from the well known examples in some of the idylls and eclogues by the founders of ancient and European pastoral poetry - Theocritus and Virgil. Moreover, it becomes evident that the Serbian poet borrowed and reproduced from the same classical source yet another, very important characteristic of bucolic poetry - the allegory. On the basis of the notes left by the poet himself, we can see that the shepherds, Obrad and Zlatoje, represent contemporary figures: the host-shepherd Zlagoje most likely represents the poet himself, wherass the guest-shepherd Obrad may be identified as Lukijan Mušicki, a church dignitary who is on his way to take over a new post. Thus at the very end of the eclogue the Latin motto expressing the wish for a happy termination of the guest's becomes fully evident., Summary.
