The Bulletin of the Institute of Ethnography SAS (I-VII)/ SASA (VIII/) is a scientific periodical of international significance which publishes papers in ethnology/anthropology. From its inception in 1952, the Bulletin publishes the results of scientific research projects of scientists and associates of the Institute and other affiliated institutions in the country and abroad. In addition, discussions and articles, supplements, field data, retrospectives, chronicles, reviews, translations, notes, bibliographies, obituaries, memories, critiques and similar are published as well. The Bulletin was founded as a means to publish the results of research of settlements and origins of populations, folk life, customs and folk proverbs. However, the concept of the Bulletin, like that of any other contemporary scientific journal, changed over time to accommodate the social, cultural and political processes and research trends in the social sciences and humanities.

The Bulletin (GEI) is referenced in the electronic bases: DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), Ulrich's Periodicals Directory and SCIndex (Serbian Citation Index). All articles are digitally available in a form typographically true to the original (in .pdf format). The Bulletin is also available in the same form on the website of the Institute of Ethnography SASA.

The Bulletin (GEI SANU) can also be found and read at CEEOL (Central and Eastern European Online Library): http://www.ceeol.com

Gender and order. Gender regimes in culture - today and through history
Gender and order. Gender regimes in culture - today and through history
The theme of the volume brings six papers devoted to the research of gender in the frame of ethnology and anthropology, but also in the wider interdisciplinary frame. This interdisciplinary intertwinement represents characteristic that is related to the gender and women studies, so I turn also to the appearance of these topics in the local frame of ethnology and anthropology, but also in the wider context of the development of schools and academic periodicals that deal with gender. The papers bring various researches and topics: the research of gender in Croatian ethnology and creation of analytical category that was abused and termed ideology; the creation of discourse about gender ideology; research about artists who act subversively through anti-fashion transgenre; problems of sexuality and reproductive rights of women in the socialist Yugoslavia that was influenced by emancipatory strategies on one hand, and deep patriarchal norms on the other; paper about women’s law of inheritance in Central Balkans in Osman times, that the same as the former paper, points to the discrepancy between norm and practice. Gender based partner violence
Gender based partner violence
This work presents results of a wider empirical research of the issue of gender based violence and violence against women as a problem rooted in structural systems of the patriarchate and the ideology of gender inequality. The goal of the research that was carried out in the Correctional Facility for Women in Požarevac, is to reassess theoretical concepts of “structural violence”, “cultural violence” and “patriarchal terrorism”. Revised are gender and patriarchal ideology, which gives legitimacy to direct and structural violence in a manner that makes it acceptable and unrecognizable as violence. Systematic violence from a partner is rooted in the patriarchal tradition which gives men the right to control their women by using not only physical violence, but maybe even more present forms of violence, like: economic violence, emotional violence, isolation, threats and many other forms of control. Narratives of women who suffered violence and killed their bullying partners, reveal their perceptions of the problem and construct a certain reality in which they were living prior to their arrival in the prison. To stay in a prison is undoubtedly a special kind of experience, and the initial event is anew survived by the probationers and “processed” while they are trying to find sense in their new living circumstances of staying in the prison. Certain social constructs and discourses can be recognized, among other things, in their narratives. Gender in nature, grammar and society
Gender in nature, grammar and society
This paper discusses the process of meaning deconstruction of the noun gender, a notion which has a special role in classification of natural and grammatical entities. The analysis is based on sources from the two Serbian dictionaries, one from the middle of 19th century (Srpski rječnik by V. S. Karadzic), and the other based on sources from the middle of 19th and 20th century (Rečnik srpskohrvatskog književnog jezika). The research focused on basic meanings of the notion gender in classification of physical entities and 'names' in Antique, foremost in Aristotle's logical opus. The analysis points out to the wrong contemporary interpretation of gender in modern gramatography and subsequent baseless feministic intervention within the language. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that after initial rigid differentiation and classification of names and nonlinguistic entities on genders and kinds, there followed an admixture of nature of names with nature of other nonlinguistic entities, including threeparticle logical structure. Moreover, this paper point out to logically unfounded division of humans into genders, as well as on to unjustified switch of political-legal expression of equality of sexes to gender equality.
General principles of researching the lexicon of traditional material culture
General principles of researching the lexicon of traditional material culture
The paper discusses a linguistic research of terminological systems connected with basic fields of human life and work which, in modern conditions, are either transformed into contemporary modern forms or gradually disappear due to changes in the way of life and work. The lexicon of material culture of native inhabitants of Vojvodina is examined, resulting in monographs on the terminologies of fishing, cartwrighting, shepherding and houses and furniture, all of which have in common the fact that the starting point was the research of the lexicon in question by semantic fields. The paper shows the lexicological and lexicographical procedures used while researching these terminological systems.
Gesture in an exoteric context
Gesture in an exoteric context
Anthropological approach to gesture studies is based on the cultural communication as well on defining the context of occurrence within the general cultural context, where latter provides the frame of reference for the communication issued. The particular gesture is reviewed according to the relation of the morphology of physical movement to the semantic contents achieved and transmitted within the contexts of relevance. The gestures discussed are those performed by the players of the Italian football clubs "Torino" and "Juventus" after scoring the goals at the games between those clubs in some past seasons. The explanatory procedure links this discussion to the gesture studies in Serbian ethnology and anthropology by structural-homologic consideration of some further contexts of relevance.
Gifts for Ottoman army
Gifts for Ottoman army
Gift-giving and gift-receiving, as an expressions of suzerainty, patronage and favor on one hand and gratitude and loyalty on the other hand, were deeply rooted in Ottoman society. This practice had extraordinary significance in the relation ruler - army, especially in wartime. At the end of the 16th century, during the Long War 1593-1606, a shipment of over fifty different sorts of objects was sent from Belgrade Treasury to Istanbul to be distributed to the army after the campaign. The list of the sent items (military equipment, armory, carpets, fabrics, cushions, kitchenware and others), which is housed today in the Archive of the Topkapı Sarayı, is one of the rarely preserved Ottoman documents that originated in Serbia and as such, it offers a unique insight to material culture of Belgrade and its surroundings. This paper examines gifts from Belgrade Treasury with the aim of revealing one fragment of the town daily life and indicating the routes of international trade that reached to our territory.
Globalization of identity in the delayed transition
Globalization of identity in the delayed transition
Together with appreciable inheritance of ethno-centric discourses about Europe and a lack of clear public communication about European integrations Serbia, largely gripped by the process of globalization and irreversible reforms of social system, is constituting its cultural identity in the light of new relations in Europe. The content of cultural notions about Serbia and Europe that Belgrade students have can point to the direction, dynamics and perception of Europe and symbolic self-constituting of our society in the wider framework.
Greek theatre in the context of cult and culture
Greek theatre in the context of cult and culture
Paper is going to research Greek theatre and its relation to Dionysian cult giving an outline of the most recognized theories in the field dealing with the issue, in order to map some of the methods and insights of the contemporary approach to Antiquity. Side by side to the acknowledged theories of Jean-Pierre Vernant (French Anthropological School of Antiquity) and of Walter Burkert, I am going to represent research of theoretician, Classicist and a specialist in Balkan linguistics and religion of an older generation active in Belgrade still in the middle of the 20th century, Milan Budimir whose visionary work sheds a new light on the contemporary theories.
Guarding the goods, producing the state
Guarding the goods, producing the state
By focusing on narratives of customs officers from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, I examine how technological and organizational change of customs work influences governance and sovereignty of the state and how customs officers produced a specific imaginary of the state through their narratives. Supporting the contention that the transnational flow of goods and people restructures rather than undermines the state power, the Serbian and Bosnian cases reveal how technological and organizational change of customs work opened up new arenas for an expression of state sovereignty and new modes of governance. Furthermore, I analyze narratives about unauthorized actions, or shady business as customs officers call it, as a mechanism through which “the state” is discursively constructed.
Guitar hero
Guitar hero
This paper aims to interpret the transformations of the “guitar hero”, from the icon of popular culture to models of nostalgic selfdesign, meaning transformations from generally recognizable figure in the context of popular culture to mimetic patterns based in medium of contemporary technologies. The phrase “guitar hero”, in its basic meaning represents a specific phenomenon in popular culture and popular music of the second half of the twentieth century. Guitar hero is a performer with skills and appearance that transcends and transforms common patterns of guitar performances, thus creating a new and distinctive form of musical and performative statement. Seen in this way, a guitar hero is close to heroic models of antique and romanticism. On the other hand, contemporary products of cultural industries and the entertainment industry to some extent changed this basic meaning of the phrase “guitar hero”. Creation and popularization of video games like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, as well as the availability of high quality replicas of instruments of “original” guitar heroes, carried the meaning of this phrase more explicit in the field of consumerism, fetishism, and virtualization. Guitar hero in its basic meaning undoubtedly belongs to the history of the twentieth century popular culture. However, his legacy is still very much present. Specific heritage of a guitar hero in contemporary popular culture lies primarily in the dissemination of the original model through the mechanisms of consumer society, and then in the mimetic patterns based in media of contemporary technology. Thanks to these characteristics, the phenomenon of guitar hero was transformed from icon of popular culture to nostalgic self-design over the original model. Whether it is a replica of instruments of guitar hero or empathy in virtual reality of video games as Guitar Hero or Rock Band, guitar hero heritage confirms its place in modern popular culture, despite the fact that the “sundown” of rock-guitar culture occurred in the last decades of the twentieth century. However, this transformation from icon of popular culture to model of nostalgic self-design is not without significance for understanding “heroic” component in the phenomenon of guitar hero. Described transformations of guitar hero put this phenomenon even closer to the ancient heroic model - its heroic character was confirmed after its death. Gypsy ethnic socialization in Serbia
Gypsy ethnic socialization in Serbia
Based on original fieldwork among Gypsies in Serbia, this paper explores Gypsy ethnic socialization and argues that Gypsy social isolation, to some extent, is self-imposed through the acceptance of their traditions. Close kin, particularly parents, are found to be the primary socializing agents of Gypsy children. Gypsy children have little or no contact with children from other ethnic groups. A crucial aspect of Gypsy socialization is an emphasis on the distinction between non-Gypsies and Gypsies; that is, between gadje and Roma: Contact with gadje, especially sexual, is considered polluting. Their social isolation results also from their traditional refusal to accept, and become a part of the larger hierarchy of their host populations. The Gypsy tradition of endogamy helped individual Gypsies to survive, leave descendants, and transmit their traditions to them.
