Literary History (Književna istorija) was founded in 1968 as a journal of the publishing house “Obod” from Cetinje, and later of the publishing house “Vuk Karadžić” as well. Its founder and first Editor-in-Chief was Aleksandar Petrov, succeeded by Jovan Deretić. During its entire existence, the journal relied on the cooperation of the research projects’ associates at the Institute for Literature and Art. In 1991 Literary History became the official organ of the Institute, and its newly appointed Editor-in-Chief, Dušan Ivanić, continued with the distinct literary-theoretical and literary-historical orientation of the journal. With Miodrag Maticki taking the position of Editor-in-Chief in 2001, Literary History broadened its concept to include interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific studies and articles as well.

- Summary/Abstract: The field that is called textology in Slavic countries (originally given that name in Russia in the 1930s), and textual scholarship in English, has been, in recent decades, developing along with information technology, which has significant implications for textological scholarship. Thanks to the constant improvement of every element of computer architecture, as well as to the ever-rising number of computer and internet users, the spreading wave of democratisation of knowledge have not ebbed. For literature and literary theory, this has meant digitalisation and the emergence of digital editions. Over the years we have seen terms such as electronic hypertext editions, dynamic editions, digital archives, knowledge sites, projects, thematic research collections, digital libraries, digital scholarly edition 2.0 etc. The terms “edition”, “archive” and “project” were retained; the latter, however, does not necessarily entail scholarly pursuit, while “archive” gained a component of editorial work on top of the basic meaning. Among the most comprehensive and modern digital editions of writers of new literature are the Walt Whitman Archive, Johann Wolfgang Goethe: Faust Historisch-Kritische Edition, The Beckett Digital Manuscript Project, Les manuscrits de Stendhal, as well as the Cervantes Project. A digital edition can contain both a critical and a diplomatic edition, digitized sources and a surfeit of supporting material, while a similar printed edition would be much more expensive to produce and less practical to use. Recently, steps have been taken to free the screen of the shackles of the printed page format, and this has led to the preference for scrolling through the text. Interactive facsimiles and the gamification of documents are in development, and once they are perfected, especially considering that such text can be searched, these digital scrolls, as we have dubbed them, are likely to be considered older and supplementary tool compared to codexes, which will assume the form of virtuality.

- Summary/Abstract: Considering how topoi, or commonplaces, in medieval literature are not seen as banal but as a recognized form of typified actions and do not diminish the author’s inventiveness, we explored the topos of suffering for others’ sake in a hagiography dedicated to Jovan Vladimir, an integral part of The Chronicle of the Priest of Duklja. Our methodological framework was based on an approach accepted in medievalist studies, which involves the use of a theological framework. Thus, we searched the New Testament for the architext of the narratives found in this hagiography. Thus far, domestic scholars have paid more attention to the holy knez than to the holy kneginja, whereas our insight suggests that the spiritual kinship of these two beings is highlighted using the same elements of characterisation. The enlightenment of both (coming from the Holy Spirit) is emphasized; both are ready to lead a life of asceticism; both are willing to make sacrifices for the sake of others (for greater good), owing to which they both take on the role of the Good Shepherd. Speaking of intertextuality, we point to the narrative strategy of identifying the suffering of Jovana Vladimir with the suffering of Jesus Christ, as seen through the actions of the main character, as well as the reactions of his loved ones to his appearance. On the other hand, the willing acceptance of God’s plan, as exemplified by the character of Kosara, mirrors the actions of the Mother of God, as described in the Gospels. In accordance with that, the hagiography of the holy knez contains the motif of the betrayal, which we discuss on an individual level, through the character of the župan of that place, but also on the collective level, when both the secular and church community, abstaining from any reaction, participate in the suffering of the innocent. The symbolism of the cross occupies an important place in this hagiography. The wooden cross on which the Son of God himself suffered stands in opposition to the golden cross, paradigmatic of the sinful man, in this case Emperor Vladislav, the slayer of the innocent. All the features fundamental to the heroes of the hagiography are a clear evidence of their holiness, and their orientation to the Logos does not impinge on the loyalty they have to one another, the two really being one and the same, as the feat of absolute and unconditional devotion to one another is in itself an act pleasing to God.

- Summary/Abstract: In the last couple of decades, cultural studies and literature have put a strong emphasis on theoretical hybridization, thus opening a space for culturological reflectionsfrom the amalgam of anthropological, philosophical, archaeological, historical, psychoanalytical and other perspectives. Furthering discussion of the important issues of literary theory and criticism, we intend to clarify some conceptual differences between the seminal terms and notions of transcultural, as well as of other correlated or conflicting, theories. We turn to and start from all those theories that cast culturological issues in terms of exchange, intersection, dialectical overcoming, transgression, transmission and, especially, translation. The essay considers a spectrum of contemplations on language and translation (from Jacques Derrida’s ladifférance and lemonolinguisme de l’autre to Walter Benjamin’s die reine Sprache), taking the inherent non-belonging, différantiation and otherness of language as the starting point of transcultural perspectives. Cast in those terms, the space of translation becomes a place of cultural hybridization where the inherent dislocation (prosthetization) of language offers possibilities of transcultural dialogues, and where the very act of translation becomes the skill of dealing in differences – translation of the untranslatable that keeps translating itself.
