The magazine Književnost i jezik has been active for fifty years in the field of Serbian language, literature, education, science and culture. In an environment where professional and scientific endeavors are not long-lasting, half a century of duration and active work of a journal are an expression of the life needs and persistence of its initiators and dedicated gathering and nurturing of associates who dedicate themselves to practice and other types of work on the improvement of speech and literary culture, ie literacy.

After the Second World War, there was a need for the representatives in the field of language and literature to gather and work together on current and key topics and issues of the Serbian language and literature in school teaching, professional work and scientific studies.

The Slavic Society was founded in June 1948, in which Slavists of all directions gathered, and in which teachers of Serbo-Croatian and Russian language and literature predominated. In 1954, due to differences of interest, a large number of members and the breadth of the area in which they gathered, the Slavic Society split into two societies: one gathered members working in the field of Serbian language and literature and the other Russian language and literature and other Slavic languages.

On that occasion, teachers, professional and scientific workers in the Serbian language and literature renewed the Society for Serbian Language and Literature, which was founded in 1910 and operated until the Second World War. They constituted and continued their work in the spirit of the program and 318 Slobodan Ž. Markovic, the tradition that this Society has achieved in the previous three decades of its rich activity. At the assembly at which the Society was renewed, a decision was made to start a new journal of the Society.
