Abstract

Nicetas Eugenianus` novel Drosilla and Charicles is the product of mimesis in two ways. First, it is modelled on classical novels and as an imitation of the novel Rhodanthe and Dosicles by Theodore Prodromus. Second, another characteristic is even more important than this change in the established genre. In the work of Prodromus, namely, there are numerous items from classical novel-writers, which were never marked as such. In the Eugenianus` text, however, there are two explicit allusions to a couple of classical novels whose protagonists are mentioned. Since this is a rare instance in Byzantine literature, its characteristics are worth analysing.
