Philologia is a peer-reviewed academic journal established by scholars at Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, in 2003. The journal welcomes articles, critical and theoretical essays, empirically-based analyses, book reviews, conference reports and translations related to the studies of language, linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, culture, translatology, social science. Various subfields of the said sciences may also be analyzed.

All papers are evaluated in a double-blind fashion by two external reviewers who are experts in the relevant field. The contributions are required to be solidly anchored in theory and methodology (qualitative or quantitative). They may be of interdisciplinary nature.

Pericles is one of Shakespeare’s late plays, written in collaboration and rarely staged – probably due to its complicated plot and disregard for the Aristotelian dictum of three unities. Produced rather late in Shakespeare’s professional and private life, it sublimes all the experience of the man, father and actor, permeated by Shakespeare’s personal relationship with his wife and daughters, as well as the political uncertainty and anxiety caused by the union with Scotland – akin to the present-day fear of the European Union and rise of British nationalism. Restless sailing, fleeing and seeking, alchemy, father-daughter relationship, Jungian spectrum of woman, migrant crisis, Brexit and human trafficking, all can be found in this play of the Prince of Tyre. This paper takes stock of the Serbian production of Pericles, with a pronounced comic note, via British to American stage productions, making way to the presentist interpretations against the backdrop of the ongoing flux and, at the same time, twinning of the local and global context of the play, the geography of which is definitely supportive and stimulating for such an approach. Though resembling a fairy tale by structure, the play’s complex topography, dramatis personae and time scheme correspond with the manifold meaning, themes and questions that it opens.

Salman Rushdie’s “Unfettered Republic of the Tongue” in Fury
Salman Rushdie’s “Unfettered Republic of the Tongue” in Fury is an assessment of Rushdie’s achievement in this novel, which is a remarkable contribution to the contemporary literature written in English. The core argument of this essay is that Rushdie’s Fury is a novel for the new millennium by its thematic focus, setting, keen observation of various cultural aspects of contemporary America, narrative tempo and even by its suggestive dust-jacket. The mixed reception enjoyed by the novel is an aspect that reflects back on Fury’s potential to both irritate and elate or at least entertain. As a matter of fact, the postmodern itself has this dual potential, and Fury is just another novel in which Rushdie gives us a “nice work” of “cultural evisceration”. Fury is also an illustration in fiction of Baudrillard’s theory of simulacra and simulations. Rushdie’s New York is, like DeLillo’s America in White Noise, a glossy hyperreality, a simulacrum. America is real only by name, its “reality” being constantly blurred by a constant erasure of the borderline between reality and fiction and by the constant intrusion of the fictitious into the real. To Rushdie’s mind “the unfettered republic of the tongue” is the most important of the writers’ “habitations”. This implies that a writer’s imagination has no frontiers and can never be fettered. An entertaining story-teller, Rushdie knows that stories are words invested with the power to create and restore or to destroy. In Fury words retain this double-edged potential, and the novel ends on an ambiguous note that leaves the reader in limbo.

The paper discusses Salman Rushdie’s development from one of the champions of the emerging postcolonial literature in the early 1980s, through his ascendancy within the literary establishment, to his doubtful status as arbiter of Anglo-Indian literature in his role as co-editor of the controversial Vintage Book of Indian Writing 1947-1997. Rushdie’s introduction to this anthology is examined in detail as one of his key non-fictional texts, with a focus on his treatment of the language issue in Indian literature(s) and his version of the Anglo-Indian canon. After revisiting some of the reactions that followed the book’s publication, notably Amit Chaudhuri’s Picador Book of Modern Indian Literature (2001) and Rushdie’s commission as a contributor to the Oxford Companion to English Literature, the paper concludes with a brief consideration of the current, legitimised status of English in Indian writing and the consolidation of Anglo-Indian literature as a well-established area within the ever expanding field of English studies.

Semantička organizacija delova kuće prema srpskim i američkim ispitanicima
This paper compares the survey data obtained from native speakers of Serbian in Kosovska Mitrovica, Serbia, and native speakers of (American) English in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The objective of the survey was twofold: (1) to provide insights into the internal structure of the house parts category, and (2) to determine what types of entities are generally classified into this category. The internal category structure was measured by the frequency and order with which the category members were named by the subjects in response to the category name. The study shows that the category is generally considered to include not only parts of the building itself, but also a large variety of household items it may contain, as well as surface/spatial entities found on a property area outside it. However, segmental parts of the building, seen either in terms of spaces or in terms of the structural elements that define those spaces, are regarded by both Serbian and American subjects as the best examples of the category.

Semiotische Untersuchung kombinierter Bild-Schrift-Medien
Die Medien, die traditionell zu einem Modus gehören, werden seit längerer Zeit zunehmend durch andere Modi bereichert. Kress (2003: 19) weist beispielsweise auf die Tatsache hin, dass der Modus Schrift durch die Ubiquität des Modus Bild in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts stark beeinflusst worden ist. Solche Prozesse führen zu der gegenseitigen Abhängigkeit unterschiedlicher Modi in einem Medium. In der Soziosemiotik werden solche Fälle unter dem Namen multimodale Texte/ Medien untersucht. Die Tatsache, dass es fast kein „reines“ oder zumindest „unbeeinflusstes“ Medium mehr gibt, berechtigt uns dazu, die Diskursanalyse von einer rein sprachlichen auf die Ebene der semiotischen Modi zu erweitern. In diesem Sinne ist Ziel dieser Arbeit, anhand von einem relativ einfachen und selten analysierten Medium wie der Postkarte, das Funktionieren der Bild-Schrift-Medien, einer Unterklasse der multimodalen Texte, darzustellen.
