Philologia is a peer-reviewed academic journal established by scholars at Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, in 2003. The journal welcomes articles, critical and theoretical essays, empirically-based analyses, book reviews, conference reports and translations related to the studies of language, linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, culture, translatology, social science. Various subfields of the said sciences may also be analyzed.

All papers are evaluated in a double-blind fashion by two external reviewers who are experts in the relevant field. The contributions are required to be solidly anchored in theory and methodology (qualitative or quantitative). They may be of interdisciplinary nature.

Subject Content Knowledge Transfer
Current economic and technological changes are influencing language structure and its usage. The most visible changes can be noticed in the field of ESP/LSP, which consists of a highly specialised division of language. Subject content knowledge, which is fundamental to this division, plays a very important role in ESP/LSP teaching. The following article discusses the impact of subject content knowledge on the teaching process and how it is presented in ESP/LSP courses. In the article, the results of the conducted survey referring to the didactic materials used in LSP teaching are presented. The main conclusion of the research is that there is a deficit of adequate specific teaching materials tailored to the various needs of learners. All the same, the desideratum concerning the need for developing teaching materials for specific content language teaching is made.

The paper examines the ways in which the characters of wives are presented in one of ‘the great tragedies’ – Othello. The thesis that is elaborated upon is that the characterization of women and wives in the tragedy cannot be isolated from the historical context, i.e. the patriarchal system of the time. The issues of family and marital relationships will be examined in the light of Feminist Criticism and New Historicism. The question that the paper tries to answer is whether the female characters are only victims of their husbands, i.e. patriarchy, or whether they are accomplices in their own tragic end.

Svetislav Stefanović, who is certainly one of the most important Serbian literary critics, poets and translators, was especially acyive at the beginning of the 20th century and between the two world wars. The first collection of poems to be translated by Stefanović was published exactly one hundred years ago. The main aim of this paper is to attempt to critically analyze the work of this poet and translator - and marks one of the first papers to look into his work. Specifically, two different versions of a poem written by Dante Gabriel Rosetti, "The Blessed Damozel", were compared and contrasted both with each other and with the English original. The analysis considers the metrical, syntactic and semantic aspects of the works.

Teaching Translation of English-Serbian False Friends to Primary-School Pupils – A New Approach
This paper deals with the translation of English-Serbian false friends into Serbian. The research was conducted in a primary school among 22 seventh-grade primary- school pupils. 14 formal and content-related English-Serbian false friends are used in the research, as well as 6 hidden anglicisms. There are three aims of the paper: first, to help pupils overcome some obstacles they have while translating English-Serbian false friends into Serbian, second, to help them find adequate equivalents for 20 English- Serbian false friends and third, to introduce some elements of contact language culture into teaching English as a foreign language. It is expected that if pupils identify similarities and differences among English-Serbian false friends and if they study them through creative activities, they will translate them appropriately. Translation is used as a way of comparing and contrasting English-Serbian false friends. Pupils’ mistakes in translation are identified, classified and then, the areas of difficulty in the target language are also found. Consequently, English-Serbian false friends are classified into three groups: adequate, unusual and unacceptable false friends.

This paper explores some aspects of textual interaction within written discourse analysis as well as possible implications of such an approach for foreign language teaching. The focus is on writer-reader interaction. The writer guides the reader by signalling through the text, whereas the reader approaches the text actively by using the writer’s signals and intertextuality which can help create expectations on further text development. All this can have a positive influence on teaching reading and writing skills and some classroom activities are suggested at the end of the paper.

Erst im Laufe der letzten paar Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts hat die Sprachwissenschaft damit begonnen, dem Thema Text die ihm gebührende Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, und in diesem Phänomen einen bedeutenden Forschungsgegenstand zu erkennen. Das Zeil dieser Arbeit besteht darin, eine skizzenhafte Darstellung derjenigen Auffassungen zu bieten, die zwischen 1970 und 2000 im Rahmen der germanistischen Linguistik vertreten bzw. vorherrschend waren. Sie wendet sich in erster Linie an diejenigen, die sonst - aus unterschiedlichsten Gründen - nicht die Gelegenheit dazu haben, sich mit den Fragen der germanistischen Linguistik auseinanderzusetzen.

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman has a clear aim in sight. It is to challenge canonical American history by creating an exemplary “autobiography.” The interviewer- editor’s manipulation of the voice of an illiterate ex-slave is all the more efficacious as it is subtle and paved with good intentions. Such a pedagogical enterprise, however, involves conventional narrative choices which paradoxically end up infantilizing a very old woman and transforming her life story into a latter-day fairy tale.

The Acquisition of English Intonation by Japanese Elementary Learners
Although the first stage of the acquisition of English intonation by Japanese learners has been anecdotally described in literature, detailed data from case studies have not been presented. In this study, some characteristics of the interlanguage phonological system are described based on the result of a preliminary experiment on elementary- level subjects. It is argued that there is a phonological constraint, which hinders the learner from proceeding further. It is also claimed that the three parameters composing English stress, namely intensity, pitch and duration, are acquired individually, and that elementary learners rely on pitch alone. Finally, it is suggested that the acquisition of intonation is a process wherein the learner overcomes and attains a command of different types of constraints.

The Application of CAT and SAT to an Arabic Diglossic Situation
L’article présent vise à appliquer et a vérifier les modèles proposés par Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) et Speech Accommodation Theory (SAT) à une communauté arabe du sud Algérien, nommément Adrar. Cette recherche se propose d’examiner si les résultats obtenus dans des communautés non diglossiques se retrouvent dans des communautés arabes diglossiques. Et pour ce faire, des enregistrements audio ont été faits à partir des programmes de la radio locale d’Adrar. Les variables linguistiques étudiées sont la vélaire /g/ et l’uvulaire /q/. Les participants à la recherche sont des animateurs radio et leurs invités respectifs. Quatre programmes ont été enregistrés, puis analysés sous forme de scores de (q) = [g]. D’un autre côté, cet article essaye de montrer que les conclusions de certaines hypothèses et modèles sociolinguistiques, tels que ceux de Labo (1966) et ceux de Haeri (1997a et b, et 2000) ne sont pas toujours vérifiables dans des communautés arabes diglossiques. Les résultats de Labo (1966) ne sont pas présents dans la communauté d’Adrar. Les résultats de Haeri sont diversement perçus. Par exemple, les femmes Adraries « innovent » et sont, en même temps, “conservatrices “ ; elles emploient, par exemple, des formes vernaculaires dans des situations formelles.
