Components of West European feudalism in the writings of Anna Komnine
Components of West European feudalism in the writings of Anna Komnine
In her "Alexiad", Anna Komnine had left various fragmented statements from witch we noticed her knowledge of many components of west European feudalism. By reciprocal comparison of Anna's statements and by analysis of separate Anna's statements on the ground of west European feudalism's erudition, we managed to prove, notice or verify Anna's knowledge of the following components: homage, vassal's oath of fealty, "ordinary" vassal liege vassal, feudal curia, feudal consilium, feudal primogeniture, ordeal by battle, count, sergeant, constable, chevalier. Also, we tried to establish the concrete details witch Anne had known about each of these components.

Composed chrysoboulloi of kings Uroš II Milutin and Stefan Dušan to the Hilandar monastery a contribution to Serbian diplomacy
In an examination of the content and the philological analysis of several transcripts of the chrysoboulloi of kings Uroš II Milutin and Stefan Dušan (four monastery transcipts and a chancery transcript made out in the chancery of the Serbian ruler), we demonstrate the role of what is today the lost chrysoboullos of King Uroš I (from around 1276) in the composition of these documents and the nature of their inter-relatedness. Uroš’s chrysoboullos, first of all, was entered by means of a transcription in the chrysoboullos of King Milutin (1297-1299), and then, through the chrysoboullos which was approved in the Assembly (in around 1303), it continued to serve as the basis for writing the composed chrysoboulloi of the kings Milutin (firstly, in 1313/1314 and later) and Dušan (1336/1345). In observing the issues of chrysoboulloi of the Serbian rulers and their transcription in the Hilandar monastery, we have tried to contribute to a better knowledge of the two chanceries in the Middle Ages, that of the Serbian ruler, and of the Hilandar monastery.
Confrontation and coalescence of two worlds
Confrontation and coalescence of two worlds
Constantine Porphyrogenitus, De administrando imperio and the Byzantine historiography of the mid-10th century
Constantine Porphyrogenitus, De administrando imperio and the Byzantine historiography of the mid-10th century
The paper is dedicated to certain aspects of the treatise De administrando imperio, composed at the court of Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus in 948-952. It first examines the diplomatic basis of the information collected in the treatise, then the management of the information available from other sources and some common information found in it and in other contemporary works such as Theophanes Continuatus, Vita Basilii and De thematibus. It closes with a conclusion about the authorship of the treatise and its place in the context of the historiographical activity at the court of Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus in the mid-10th century. Contributions to the study of the images of hierarchs in the catholicon of Studenica Monastery
The paper is devoted to selected images of the saint hierarchs in the Church of the Virgin in Studenica Monastery. The attention is first of all focused on the figures of four bishops who were partially covered by the high iconostasis from the XIX century. These are standing figures of St. Achillius and an unidentified saint, and busts of St. Parthenius and St. Charalambos. In adittion to mentioned, some other figures are also analyzed - three saints named Gregory in the prothesis, St. Cyril of Alexandria in the apse, a bust of St. Clement of Rome on the west wall of the nave, as well as the bust of eponymous saint - probably Clement, bishop of Sardis - on the eastern arch below the dome. .
Costantino Continuato. Ideologia e iconografia del carisma imperiale bizantino agli albori dell’ età moderna
Costantino Continuato. Ideologia e iconografia del carisma imperiale bizantino agli albori dell’ età moderna
In the second half of the 16th century, after the definitive Turkish conquest of Constantinople, the titulus of Constantine came to be perceived in a fundamentally new way within the design to reaffirm papal authority, culminating in the pontificate of Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini. Diplomatic wrangling and the strategic plan to save Byzantium in the West in the two decades after the fall of Constantinople had and would have had the precise aim of reinstating the hereditary title of the Byzantine Caesars, transferred to the East by Constantine and never extinguished, within the orbit of papal influence. The seat of Peter and the sceptre of Eastern Christianity should have been symbolically reunited in the ‘New Byzantium,’ which would have had its base at Rome and its bridgehead at Mystras. The project failed also because its main supporters died one after the other within a short period of time. But during the decades when it was pursued, we witness a true revival of the figure of Constantine and an accentuation of the symbolic primacy and legal significance of his title in the deliberations and political actions of humanist intellectuals, and their reflection in the artistic commissions of the period.

This article investigates the ceremonial of the subjection of the Serbian župan Stefan Nemanja to the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1172) and compares it with similar events of the period in question. It argues for a strong influence of western forms of conflict resolution (“deditio”) in the ceremonial.

Date of the composition of the Notitiae episcopatuum ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae nos. 4, 5 and 6
The Notitiae episcopatuum Ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae nos. 4, 5 and 6 are important sources for the reconstruction of the territorial organization of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the 9th century. There are different oppinions in the existing scholarly works about precise dating of those notitiae, ranging from the beginning of the 9th century, through the middle of it, up to its end. In this work, we analyse the content of each of the mentioned notitiae and point to certain elements which allow us to date more precisely each of them to the period between 806 and 838.
