Philologia is a peer-reviewed academic journal established by scholars at Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, in 2003. The journal welcomes articles, critical and theoretical essays, empirically-based analyses, book reviews, conference reports and translations related to the studies of language, linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, culture, translatology, social science. Various subfields of the said sciences may also be analyzed.

All papers are evaluated in a double-blind fashion by two external reviewers who are experts in the relevant field. The contributions are required to be solidly anchored in theory and methodology (qualitative or quantitative). They may be of interdisciplinary nature.

Alle drei Verfahren des Einsatzes visueller Medien (das beschreibende und das problemstellende Verfahren, die Mischform, die beide erstgenannten kombiniert) können erfolgreich eingesetzt werden. Die Entscheidung für eine der angeführten Ansätze ist vom Sprachniveau der Unterrichtsteilnehmer, von der Zielsetzung des Lehrenden und der Themenbezogenheit abhängig. Für spontane Fremdsprachenproduktion der Studenten im IV. Studienjahr würde das problemstellende Verfahren eher passen.

Water as Metaphor in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse
This paper explores the metaphorical meanings of water in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse within the mythology of water newly established in Modernism via interpretations of ancient myths by the first anthropologists and psychologists. Special regard is accorded to the symbolic journey over water, in which the hero is disintegrated, but then also regenerated by water. The most significant symbol in the novel, the lighthouse, by being juxtaposed to the fluidity of life, becoming, and dissipation, acquires additional meanings in this analysis.

When perfect meets aorist Aoristic resultative in languages built on descending time (Tocharian, Albanian and Slavic)
Because of its implicational meaning and perfective aspect, the position of the aorist resultative is quite special in languages which are built on Descending Time (Hewson & Bubenik 1997). Sometimes it functions as a perfect, sometimes as a pluperfect, and sometimes it acquires other meanings, for example conditional. It often does not form any resultative at all. This article is intended to answer the question, ”What is the position of the aoristic resultative?”, i.e. what is its relation to the perfect (auxiliary in the imperfective present) and to the pluperfect (auxiliary in the imperfective past)? In order to answer these questions, the author will analyze the taxis formation with the auxiliary in the present (imperfective present), imperfect (imperfective past) and aorist (perfective past) in three Indo-European families which are built on the representation of Descending Time, i.e. Tocharian, Albanian, and Slavic (Old Church Slavonic, Sorbian and especially Polish). By the comparative analysis it will be demonstrated that there are some semantic and formal constraints on forming the aoristic resultative in languages that are constructed on the representation of Descending Time. These constraints will explain why the aoristic resultative is an unstable category and acquires different meanings and uses.

The arrival and settlement in Britain since 1945 of new immigrant communities has introduced fresh themes, formal structures and narrative subjects into British fiction. Many of these novels, written by second and third generation immigrants, concern the process of departure, transition and adjustment arising from the experience of coming to a new country. Zadie Smith’s White Teeth and Monica Ali’s Brick Lane are two such novels, representing different aspects of the immigrant experience, the first from the Caribbean and the second from Bangladesh. Their narrative modes and points of view are very different and demonstrate contrasting approaches to the representation of change and the challenges, tensions and complexities of Britain rapidly-changing multicultural society.

Zapadni ideogram i orijentalni egzoticizam
China as inspiration plays an important role in the literary work of Paul Claudel and Victor Segalen. The two French authors may be regarded as a missing link between Modernism and the literary traditions that preceded it. In this context, Claudel’s and Segalen’s interest in Chinese literary forms, language and script represents an anticipation of the later modernist preoccupations and experiments based on Chinese influences. Taking Chinese script as a role-model, Claudel attempts to iconize the symbolic system in his own language, thus creating new and authentic poetic forms, whereas Segalen introduces a very personal perception of China enriched with informative sinological observations. With their creative perception of China, both Claudel and Segalen succeeded in exerting a double influence: on one hand, they acquainted the Western reader with various valuable segments of Chinese cultural traditions, and on the other, they also provoked a series of questions concerning the role, freedom and strategies of a writer as an objective interpreter of other cultures.

This paper aims to illustrate some reasons for investigating color terms in a language. In doing so, we will concentrate on the finding that color terms and colors do not fully correspond, resulting in the fact that color terms can also influence the status of a color in a given society (and not only in the reverse order), which leads us to the intersections of linguistic, cultural and anthropological influences that can be viewed through color.

Le but de cet essai est de montrer la relation que Gide essaie d'établir entre lui- même et le monde extérieur (y compris ses lecteurs) dans Les Faux-Monnayeurs, son unique ouvrage auquel il a donné le sous-titre de roman. Plusieurs parallèles qui existent entre lui-même et Edouard, un de ses personnages principaux, indiquent qu’il veut dresser l’image la plus vraisemblable que possible, alors que, de l’autre côté, on y trouve également beaucoup de parallèles peu probables, ce qui prouve le contraire. A cette atmosphère, claire et trouble à la fois, l’auteur ajoute des événements représentant la réalité parfois trop évidente. De cette manière il dresse une sorte de miroir donnant une image complète du travail de l’écrivain et du milieu littéraire, ce qui correspond à son procédé de la mise en abîme . Cette recherche tente d’examiner au moins un peu ce miroir littéraire très complexe
