Lucida intervalla: časopis za klasične nauke

Primary tabs

Lucida intervalla was founded by a group of members of the Department of Classical Studies in Belgrade in 1998, at the time when they perceived their reading and interpreting of ancient texts as sobering acts and breakouts from confusing reality. Hence the name of the journal. The initial idea was to provide students of Classics and general audience with reliable and up to date editions (introductions, original texts, translations, and commentaries) of important and not yet translated works of Greek and Latin literature. In the next 15 years more than 40 volumes were published. The focus of the journal gradually shifted from translations to scholarly contributions, while the proportion of contributions in languages other than Serbian increased slowly but steadily. Today Lucida intervalla is an international peer-reviewed journal devoted to publishing original scholarly research in all areas of Classical Studies.

Testamentum porcelli
Testamentum porcelli
The Admirable Protogenes and his Christian School
The Admirable Protogenes and his Christian School
The article examines in detail the school opened in Antinoopolis by Protogenes of Edessa, as reported by Theodoret of Cyrrhus (HE 4.18.8–9). The school’s programme and Christianized syllabus are compared with two systems of education: the relatively new (Christian) Syrian and the established Graeco-Roman. After the school is placed in the latter system, its exact place within it and its nature are considered, in particular regarding the teaching of stenography. Lastly, the article examines why Theodoret’s focus is on Protogenes as a proselytizer rather than an innovative teacher, the value and standing of high literary culture in later Roman society, and the role schools and education played in forming and maintaining this culture., Abstract ; Апстракт, Bibliografija: str. 135, Napomene i bibliografske reference uz tekst
The Authorial Drama of Prudentius in the Apotheosis, Amartigenia, and Psychomachia
The Authorial Drama of Prudentius in the Apotheosis, Amartigenia, and Psychomachia
The authorial persona figures prominently at the end of Prudentius’s Apotheosis, Amartigenia, and Psychomachia. In the first poem, the writer is supremely confident in his resurrection; in the second poem, he prays only for a lenient punishment; and in the third, he eagerly awaits the resolution to come with Christ’s arrival. Rather than read these passage as biographical evidence, this paper offers a model for how to understand such scenes as literary and fictional devices: they are designed to enact and elicit the faith that is a major theme in the poetry of Prudentius, and each passage suggests that the author’s survival is coterminous with his positive literary reception. One important result of a poetic reading of Prudentius’s faith is that it confirms the substantial continuity between his poetry and the previous tradition of Latin poetry. An appendix sets out the evidence for thinking that the Hymnus de trinitate was written as a preface for these three poems when they were arranged as a trilogy., Abstract ; Апстракт, Bibliografija: str. 164-166, Napomene i bibliografske reference uz tekst
The Development of Indo-European *-ln- in the Greek Inherited Lexicon
The Development of Indo-European *-ln- in the Greek Inherited Lexicon
Two reflexes of the IE cluster *-ln- are generally recognised in Greek: the assimilation of *-ln- to -λλ-, and the vowel lengthening in front of *-l-, prompted by the loss of *-n-. A reassessement of the relevant Greek material is proposed.
The Poet's New Clothes
The Poet's New Clothes
This paper explores the way three Roman translators of Aratus’ Φαινόμενα (Cicero, Germanicus and Avienus) treated the style of the original and what were their reasons for treating in such a way. These considerations should, furthermore, be also revealing as to the general conceptions and ideas the translators had about their task. The three stylistic features of Aratus assessed in detail in this paper are: (1) word play (as a typically Hellenistic asset); (2) personification and comparison (understood in a way characteristic of Aratus’ poem); (3) references to the poet-teacher and the pupil-reader (as a recurrent motive in didactic poetry)., Abstract ; Апстракт, Bibliografija: str. 114-116, Napomene i bibliografske reference uz tekst
The Punic motif in Claudian's De Bello Gildonico.
The Punic motif in Claudian's De Bello Gildonico.
De Bello Gildonico (The War against Gildo) is a composition in hexametres written by the Late Antique poet Claudian (c. 370 — c. 405). This paper discusses lines 76—91, which deal with the Carthaginian conflict. The passage highlights one of the main themes of the poetic work (loyalty in contrast to treason), thus contributing to its intra-textual coherence. From an ideological viewpoint the devices of memoria and exemplum conveyed by the Punic motif appear to be oblique comments on Claudian’s political and military context., Abstract, Bibliografija: str. 275-276, Napomene i bibliografske reference uz tekst
The Rhythm of the Day
The Rhythm of the Day
The paper explores the composition, the stylistic features and the time and space references of Martial’s epigram 4.8, indicating the meaning created through the contrast in its bipartite structure, and through the imagery in the second part, which implies recognition for the realm of poetry, not much lower than that for the realm of political and social power. The title uses the metaphor of poetry and prose in order to emphasize the suggested high estimation of poetry. It is placed above the ordinary practical activities and the daily routine as being worth the scene of celestial eminence of the palace.
The law of freedom is the law of love. Some remarks on Christian liberty in Augustineʼs thinking.
The law of freedom is the law of love. Some remarks on Christian liberty in Augustineʼs thinking.
We encounter the term “liberty” (libertas) in many places of Augustine’s writings. Basically, he uses it in two different contexts: politically and religiously. However, he does not provide a systematic definition of the term in either category, although in the period of the anti-Pelagian controversy his ideas develop into an informal definition of the term. In this paper, I briefly summarize some basic aspects of the term liberty as it is presented in the political as well as in the religious contexts, and then I focus mostly on his concept of Christian liberty which is the term Augustine uses whenever he talks about the true liberty manifested by the real presence of God’s love in man. In fact, this love strenghtens human will in pursuing the good works which the human being is unable to perform by himself without God’s grace after Adam’s fall., Abstract, Bibliografija: str. 260-262, Napomene i bibliografske reference uz tekst

Upotreba grčkog jezika u Ciceronovim pismima Atiku
U ovom radu reč je o tome kako se Ciceron služio grčkim jezikom u "Pismima Atiku", i o naročitim namerama i razlozima koji možda leže u osnovi tog upadljivog fenomena.
