Lucida intervalla was founded by a group of members of the Department of Classical Studies in Belgrade in 1998, at the time when they perceived their reading and interpreting of ancient texts as sobering acts and breakouts from confusing reality. Hence the name of the journal. The initial idea was to provide students of Classics and general audience with reliable and up to date editions (introductions, original texts, translations, and commentaries) of important and not yet translated works of Greek and Latin literature. In the next 15 years more than 40 volumes were published. The focus of the journal gradually shifted from translations to scholarly contributions, while the proportion of contributions in languages other than Serbian increased slowly but steadily. Today Lucida intervalla is an international peer-reviewed journal devoted to publishing original scholarly research in all areas of Classical Studies.

Licinianusʼ account of the Roman campaigns against the Balkan tribes in 85 B.C.
In Granius Licinianus´ description (35.79–81 Criniti) of the Roman war in the hinterland of Macedonia in 85 B.C., two independent Roman campaigns against the Balkan tribes are mentioned. The fragmentary text has given rise to emendations, thus admits different readings. It is proposed here an interpretation of the text that seems the most plausible, on both historical and linguistic grounds. Relying on this interpretation, it seems proper to reconsider some common observations regarding certain Balkan tribes and their part in the First Mithridatic war, as well as the timing of the Hortensius’ military campaign., Abstract ; Апстракт, Bibliografija: str. 115-117, Napomene i bibliografske reference uz tekst

Looking (at) Ariadne Vision and Meaning in Catullus, Ovid and Hofmannsthal
Ariadne’s story in Catullus’ Wedding of Peleus and Thetis is a drama of looking, seeing, and not seeing. It depicts interpersonal relations and distinguishes presence and absence, life and death, by thematizing the visual contact between the characters, between gods and humans, and between the internal audience and the image described in the ecphrasis. In Catullus the gaze sometimes expresses the objectifying force of power or its failure, but it may also denote the possibility of communication, interpersonal contact, or mutual attachment. The preoccupation with visual perception represents the complexity of the encounter with the Other in the face of those we might or might not love or need: a lover, a close relative, a divine power, a work of art, a fictional reality. Ovid’s Letter of Ariadne to Theseus echoes its predecessor. While Catullus’ Ariadne comes into contact with reality through intense and desperate looking, Ovid’s heroine relies on actual interpersonal contact: she tries to send visual signs, stay visible and thus make Theseus reconsider. Hofmannsthal’s libretto for Ariadne auf Naxos is amazingly comparable to Catullus’ poem. The text is again complex and sophisticated, exploring concepts like memory, fidelity, loss, transformation, surviving and living on. The paradox of the human condition, the dialectic of sameness and transformation, of rigidness and vitality, is expressed through Ariadne’s refusal to look or even stay visible. All three Ariadnes experience a gap between themselves and reality, marked through a visual vacuum, by looking in vain, being unable to see or be seen, or refusing to look and see.

Mulieribus apta sunt blandimenta - umiljavanja u govoru ženskih likova u Plautovim komedijama Amfitrion, Bahide i Menehmi
Već su stari Rimljani uočili razliku u jezičkim registrima onoga što bi se moglo nazvati »muškim« i »ženskim« idiomom, ograničavajući potonji najvećma na umiljato podilaženje i neprekidno samosažaljivanje. Ovakva polna diskriminacija jezika više nego drugde, očigledna je u rimskoj dramskoj književnosti i delima njenog najreprezentativnijeg predstavnika. Cilj ovog rada je da u tri Plautove drame ustanovi i analizira ona specifična svojstva ženskog govora koja ga čine mekim, podilazećim i laskavim, i utvrdi da li su ta svojstva zajednička svim ženskim likovima ili postoji još finije jezičko raslojavanje među različitim tipskim likovima, odnosno da li unutar ženskog idioma postoji specifična društvena stratifikacija ili ne.

The inductive-contexual methodology, envisaged by Hans Ørberg, emphasizes the “natural” learning of a language as it was a L1 and, exspecially, the acquisition of grammatical rules, through discovery-approach. Cognitive psycologists of Second Language Acquistion (SLA) usually speak about implicit learning/knowledge and explixit learning/knowledge. In this contribution, according standpoint of SLA, conscious learning of grammar by traditional methodology will be put in comparison with the tacit (“natural”) learning which should somehow occur by inductive-contexual methodology.
