Regular issues of Communications and Culture Online are published once a year, in the last week of December. Before the new issue of the magazine comes out as a whole, the so-called pre-publishing. TEACHING ENGLISH WORD-FORMATION PROCESSES TO TRANSLATION STUDENTS
Sažetak English and Arabic have different word formation processes with which translation students must be familiar. Results of a needs-assessment questionnaire showed that junior translation students almost had no knowledge of English word formation processes such as compounding, derivation, back formation, conversion, extension, blending, clipping, acronyms and abbreviations, onomatopoeia, borrowings and neologisms and had difficulty translating lexical items in each category into Arabic. Results of a post-test showed that direct instruction in word formation processes was effective in developing students’ awareness of similarities and differences between English and Arabic word formation processes and enhanced their ability to Arabize English technical terms.

Sažetak Rad se bavi odnosom izmeñu junaka romana Gospoña Dalovej i grada Londona kroz prizmu teorije interfejsa Elizabet Gros, kojom se veza izmeñu tela i grada odreñuje kao dvosmerna i koizgrañujuća. Sa težnjom da ukaže na utemeljenost romana na dvosmernosti i neraskidivosti veze izmeñu tela i grada, rad najpre posmatra tu relaciju iz dve suprotne perspektive – iz ugla pojedinačnog junaka i njegove egzistencije u gradu 20. veka i s pozicije urbanog prostora modernog Londona koji stupa u živote fiktivnih junaka Virdžinije Vulf. Nakon toga predmet rada su scene romana koje na doslovan ili simboličan način prikazuju interfejs tela i grada. Dolazi se do zaključka da je veza izmeñu junaka Gospoñe Dalovej i Londona u koji su smešteni dvosmerna, sveprisutna i trajna, te da se s pravom može nazvati savremenim terminom interfejs.

Sažetak Text is deemed as a minimal unit of communication in intercultural transaction, and should be fully borne in mind in any translation activity as translation is first and foremost thought to be a project for maintaining communicative thrust between the Source Language (SL) and the Target Language (TL). This can be achieved by observing minimal denotative meanings and relaying maximal connotative meanings of the SL text so that emotiveness can be secured. This paper borrows a criminological term ʻautopsyʼ for detailed componential analysis of emotiveness, based on the assumption in discourse analysis that text is an animated entity replete with myriads of positive and negative overtones. Autopsy is applied to a translation from Arabic into English by Maʻan News Agency (MNA) in 2013. The paper argues that the lexical choice opted for by MNA does not occur in a vacuum, but on the periphery of an ideology born of a long-standing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. In the end, the paper shows a lack of emotiveness in the translation because of linguistic and cultural differences between the two languages, and two major strategies are employed thereof: addition and omission.

Sažetak Il presente contributo ha lo scopo di descrivere e di illustrare le difficoltà degli apprendenti serbofoni nell’acquisizione dell’italiano Ls per scopi accademici. Sul piano metodologico, si è scelto di utilizzare l’analisi contrastiva e l’analisi degli errori per individuare le difficoltà più frequenti a livello morfosintattico, legate in particolare alle forme ed agli usi di articoli, sostantivi, aggettivi e pronomi, con particolare riguardo ai casi dovuti all’interferenza con la L1 dello studente nonché alle diverse fasi nello sviluppo dell’interlingua in cui tali difficoltà solitamente appaiono. La riflessione sugli errori morfosintattici offerta nel contributo può trovare la sua applicazione pratica in una pianificazione didattica che ponga al suo centro l’interesse linguistico dell’apprendente serbo.

Sažetak Con il presente contributo intendiamo illustrare, per mezzo dell’analisi contrastiva e dell’analisi degli errori, le difficoltà dell’apprendente serbofono nell’acquisizione dell’italiano L2. Ci focalizziamo sugli errori più frequenti a livello morfosintattico, riguardanti in particolare le forme e gli usi di preposizioni, avverbi, numeri, congiunzioni, particelle e verbi, cercando di precisare le fasi nello sviluppo dell’interlingua in cui tali errori si manifestano. Discutiamo inoltre le difficoltà dello studente relativamente all’ordine delle parole nella frase. La nostra riflessione sugli errori morfosintattici si presenta potenzialmente utile per i docenti di italiano L2 ai fini di una pianificazione del percorso didattico mirato ai fabbisogni linguistici dell’apprendente serbo.

THE CHOICE OF LEXEMES ACCORDING TO THEIR FREQUENCY IN TRANSLATION INTO L2
Sažetak In their translation courses, English language and literature students are taught how to use translation techniques and procedures which ensure adequacy of their lexical choices. However, more often than not, when choosing a lexeme, students take into consideration a number of factors that lead to a less than ideal choice. In our research, we used a corpus that comprised translations of an excerpt from the novel Ubistvo s predumišljajem [‘Premeditated Murder’] by Slobodan Selenić. All students who had translated the excerpt into English are native speakers of Serbian and in their final year of BA studies, and considered to be proficient (C1 or C2) English speakers. The goal of the study was to show to what extent and why students opted for using higher frequency lexemes rather than the ones that ensured adequacy by using error and mistake analysis. The results of the study can be used to gain a better insight into students’ translation process in order to develop strategies which improve the education of future professionals.

Sažetak In this paper, another in a series of papers dealing with colour terms and their etymologies (greys, reds, blues and purples having been researched previously), the author focuses on yellows: the pigments/dyes used through history, their origins, manufacture and stories that have become inextricably linked to them; the associations that specific colours seem to evoke both on personal and collective levels (culturally and socially induced colour associations); yellow colour terms and their etymologies. The colour yellow has always held a great fascination for humans throughout history as well as serving to perpetuate various social memes, some of which are of particular significance to art history studies. The relevant etymologies and the stories they tell shed light on the history of yellow pigments and dyes, and the role they have played in our civilization, whilst providing an interesting example of a language - art history interface.

Sažetak Rāhul Sāṃkṛtyāyan (1893-1963) is a very prolific Indian intellectual and writer, who published in five languages about a very wide spectrum of subjects. He was a self-made person, had no formal education and no fixed residence, nor a stable job. A polyglot and a traveller, he is surprisingly little studied and many of his works have never been printed. Among his writings particularly relevant is Ghumakkaṛ śāstra (A Treatise of Vagabondology), a handbook for roamers claiming that wandering is the first and ultimate goal in human life. A world traveller, he wrote many travelogues. This paper focuses on the philosophical importance the author attributes to wandering.

THE UBIQUITY OF INTERTEXTUALITY
Sažetak The fact that culture and language are two sides of the same coin makes translation activity quite challenging. This is due to the fact that translation is seen as the transference of meaning between two languages; however, translation goes far beyond the transfer of meanings. For instance, intertextuality is a rhetorical device employed by text producers to express more than what is said in an utterance. The present paper examines intertextuality in the translation of The Square Moon: Supernatural Tales (1998) by Ghada As-Samman. Intertextuality is first discussed in relation to text, genre and discourse. The analysis shows the realisation of intertextual potentials of Arabic does not only hinge on the process of translation, but it also requires a Target Language (TL) audience with such wide knowledge of the Source Language (SL) culture. The study reveals that when the intertextual reference is esoteric, two translation strategies may be used: foreignisation whereby borrowing and reborrowing are employed, and domestication, in which loan translations are utilised.

TOURISM DISCOURSE IN LANGUAGE TEXTBOOKS
Sažetak Within the framework of critical pedagogy theory and using critical discourse analysis, the purpose of this article is to examine how tourism discourse is constructed and what ideological forces are manifested in foreign language textbooks. To that end, six series of Catalan language textbooks are critically examined through an analysis based on main themes, genres and perspectives. Findings indicate the relevance of tourism discourse in textbooks, which occurs mainly through autobiographical narratives, promotional texts and commercial-oriented genres. Further, this paper argues that four main perspectives are embedded in tourism discourse in the textbooks examined: (a) consumerism; (b) superficial cosmopolitanism; (c) a dominant rationality related to the neoliberal capitalist economy; and (d) culture as a commodity. The article ends with a call to language teaching professionals to be more aware of the ideological underpinning of textbooks.
