Sažetak Dangling Man is a diary written during the Second World War; Joseph is expecting his draft papers and has entered a critical period of idleness. This article starts by considering the close relationship between war and opportunism, which situates Joseph‟s alienation in a precise socio-historical context. It then draws a parallel between the hero‟s crisis and the rise of Sartre‟s existentialism before examining the question of the young man‟s approach to reality as a writer and a reader.

ŠTA ŽENA MORA DA ČINI
Sažetak Rad se bavi analizom rodnih i feminističkih aspekata u poeziji savremene američke pesnikinje Ursule Raker, koja već gotovo dve decenije stvara na razmeđu popularne kulture i visoke umetnosti u karakterističnom žanru poezije govorne reči. Kroz analizu pesama, autor pokušava da raščlani slojeve afro-američkog socijalnog i kulturnog nasleđa, kao i da odredi mesto ove pesnikinje u okvirima tradicije crnog pesništva i objasni njen poetski izraz nastao u susretu revolucionarne i aktivističke poezije crnih pesnikinja koje su stvarale sedamdesetih godina prošlog veka i savremenih tendencija koje se vezuju za hip-hop kulturu. U cilju kontekstualizacije opusa autorke, daje se i kratak pregled geneza crnog feminizma i savremenog afro-američkog književnog izraza.

ŠVEDSKE ZAVISNOSLOŽENE REČENICE SA VREMENSKOM KLAUZOM UVEDENOM LEKSIKALIZOVANIM SPOJEM INTE FÖRRÄN
Sažetak Švedske zavisnosložene rečenice sa vremenskom klauzom uvedenom leksikalizovanimspojem INTE FÖRRÄN pokazuju niz karakteristika drugačijih od karakteristika tipičnih švedskihzavisnosloženih vremenskih rečenica u koje je vremenska klauza integrisana posredstvomtemporalnog veznika FÖRRÄN, a koje uobičajeno iskazuju da nerealizovana predikacijasupraordirane klauze u vremenu prethodi predikaciji vremenske klauze. U radu stogaukazujemo na osnovne sintaksičko-semantičke i strukturne specifičnosti švedskihzavisnosloženih vremenskih rečenica sa leksikalizovanim spojem INTE FÖRRÄN (poputtemporalnog odnosa između njihovih korelativnih predikacija, jednog broja sintaksičkosemantičkihodlika njihovih korelativnih predikacija, te distribucije njihovih klauza), osvrćući sepritom i na osnovne sintaksičko-semantičke i strukturne specifičnosti srpskih zavisnosloženihvremenskih rečenica sa temporalnim veznikom KAD(A) i modalnom partikulom tek, kojepredstavljaju njihove prevodne ekvivalente.

Sažetak Merdokova koristi mitove različitih društava i iz različitih istorijskih perioda kako bi dala pouke koje su primjenjive u savremenom društvu, tj. da nam ljubav, umjetnost i književnost mogu pomoći da prevaziđemo sve prepreke koje nam život postavlja, kao i zamke u kojima nas vrebaju komplikovani i sebični ljudi, svojevrsni „čarobnjaci“ u savremenom društvu, čime spoznajemo istinu o sebi samima i o drugima. Upotrebom Frojdovih, socioloških kao i teorija o beznačajnosti i otuđenju u savremenom društvu cilj nam je da dokažemo da samo kada shvatimo surovu realnost svijeta u kome živimo, nakon što pobjegnemo od svih čini, kandži i pogleda zastrašujućih bića i čarobnjaka, ponovo zadobijamo slobodu i prepoznajemo svoj identitet, te postajemo sposobni da živimo bez straha i opsesija, oslobođeni tamnih strana svoje psihe i svjesni da su ljudi oko nas stvarna bića, sa potrebama i željama drugačijim od naših. Mitove i tabue razbijamo tako što postajemo kentauri sposobni da se izvuku ispod mreže obmana i laži koje život i pojedinci pletu nad nama.

ОN THE FORMER AND PRESENT STATUS OF THE AROMANIAN LANGUAGE IN THE BALKAN PENINSULA AND IN EUROPE
Sažetak This paper gives a brief historical overview of linguistic surveys (Romance and Romanian linguistics) of the status of Aromanian within Romance language linguistics and Balkan linguistic area. Until quite recently, relevant linguists considered this language to be merely a dialect of Daco-Romanian, while today it is generally seen as an autonomous Balkan Romance language. The fact that this language, apart from having a considerably large number of native speakers, especially in their homelands, is little known to general public in the Balkans and in Europe.

‘BIG C’ AND ‘SMALL C’ CULTURE IN EFL MATERIALS USED WITH SECOND YEAR STUDENTS MAJORING IN ENGLISH AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE
Sažetak The paper explores cultural content in EFL materials used at university level in Belgrade. The materials were examined with the purpose of establishing if they differ in the extent to which they represent big ‘C’ culture and small ‘c’ culture, and also what topics predominate. Statistical analysis revealed that there are more occurrences of small ‘c’ cultural topics than big ‘C’ topics. The most common specific topic referring to culture with a big ‘C’ was literature, followed by education and institutions, while the most prominent topic regarding small ‘c’ culture included values, beliefs and attitudes, followed by everyday living and interpersonal relations.

“I AM MY LANGUAGE”. ARABIC LANGUAGE IN ENGLISH WRITING IN AHDAF SOUEIF’S WORK
Sažetak In this paper the author will examine how the Egyptian writer Ahdaf Soueif, although writing in English, uses the Arabic language as a narrative tool in her novels, especially in the one entitled In the Eye of the Sun. Starting from the Chicano writer Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s statements about the use of different languages as presented in Borderland/La frontera, the author will argue that Soueif’s strategy is a powerful tool that challenges the British presence in Egypt at the time of colonialism and move on to analyze the influence of the English language used in the novel. Soueif's bilingual writing (English/Arabic) can be thus perceived as an instance of adaptation of one’s mother tongue to the surrounding linguistic environment, as well as a tool of empowerment. The English-writing author Soueif allows the Arabic language emerge in her narrative especially when dealing with historical issues, therefore reassessing the Arab national identity in Egypt and overcoming what seems to be linguistic “colonialism”. After describing the author’s cultural background, the author will propose certain examples of this kind of writing and/or transcultural translation which represents an act of resistance as opposed to the standardised trend of the English language.

Sažetak This paper aims to explore a case of most overused ‘teddy bear’ in the Serbian component of the ICLE corpus (version 3), the lexeme thing, which appears about four times more frequently in the Serbian subcorpus than in the reference native corpus used in the study (LOCNESS). The research follows the quantitative-qualitative design, thus combining the applicable software tools with the qualitative analysis. The results clearly indicate that Serbian learners of English are in favour of exploiting the lexeme thing in various roles. Firstly, if the thing ‘teddy bear’ is used on its own, it can denote a number of concepts the meaning of which may be recovered from the context: life in general, ideas, physical objects, achievements. This role of the thing ‘teddy bear’ is the result of the cognitive strategy of generalisation. Secondly, if the thing 'teddy bear' is pre- and/or postmodified, the structural head is less dominant than its modifiers. In actual fact, modifiers direct NP functions in the four distinct directions: the organisational function, the propositional function, the attitudinal function estimating relative importance, and the attitudinal function of evaluation. The organisational function is used in a modified (essentially syntactic) manner by Serbian EFL learners: it serves the student writer more than the putative reader. The propositional function, where modifiers are semantically dominant, also uses the syntactic potential of thing, to form complex phrases instead of simple ones. Both attitudinal functions, of relative importance and evaluation, exploit superlatives, expressing no real comparison at all, but emphasizing, or inflating student writers’ arguments. Further research should be carried out to explore reasons for such diversified and frequent use of the thing ‘teddy bear’ in Serbian EFL writing, L1 transfer certainly ranking high among them.

Sažetak Research in speech act studies has only focused on those that are regularly performed in one’s daily life (e.g. apologies, requesting, complaints) (Elwood, 2004). Compared with other speech acts, few studies have attracted researchers’ attention on how people express their feelings to an obituary. The present study is an attempt to find out the strategies Iranian native speakers of Farsi used when responding to an obituary note. Data were collected and analyzed from the condolences notes on a deceased contemporary Iranian actor in 2008. Two hundred comments were analyzed to examine the strategies used in expressing condolences. The findings are anticipated to add to the body of research in speech act and pragmatic studies.
