Communication and Culture Online is a free electronic scientific journal. Our goal is to improve knowledge in the field of linguistics, literature, communication, culture, intercultural and related disciplines.

Regular issues of Communications and Culture Online are published once a year, in the last week of December. Before the new issue of the magazine comes out as a whole, the so-called pre-publishing. In addition to regular issues, Communication and Culture online also publishes special thematic editions, independently or in collaboration with partners.

Sažetak Ovim istraţivanjem daje se celovit pregled neposrednih i posrednih integralnih prevoda arapskih romana u Srbiji od prvog takvog prevoda pa do danas. U radu je predstavljen razvoj arapskog romana razmatranjem odlika prevedenih dela, njihovog stila, narativne tehnike, tema koje obraĊuju, pravca kome pripadaju, znaĉaja koji imaju u okvirima arapske knjiţevnosti i drugih relevantnih ĉinjenica koje bolje pribliţavaju ovaj ţanr i smeštaju ga u okvire svetske knjiţevnosti. U radu je predstavljena i kritiĉka recepcija prevedenih dela. Na ovaj naĉin posredno se razmatra zastupljenost arapske knjiţevnosti u Srbiji uopšte, problemi koji u ovoj delatnosti postoje, kao i perspektive i moguće strategije za unapreĊivanje prevoĊenja u svojstvu vaţne arabistiĉke aktivnosti. Kada je reĉ o posrednim prevodima, dodatno se razmatra problematika takve vrste prevoda, sa posebnim osvrtom na kulturnu transpoziciju.

AUDIO-VIZUELNA SREDSTVA U NASTAVI STRANIH JEZIKA STRUKE
Sažetak U cilju osavremenjivanja nastave stranih jezika struke i povećanja motivacije studenata, neprestano se teži poboljšanju kako nastavnih materijala, tako i uvođenju različitih sredstava u nastavni proces. Shodno tome, u radu se razmatraju prednosti primene audio-vizuelnih sredstava u didaktičke svrhe. Za potrebe istraživanja sprovedena je anketa među predavačima stranog jezika struke na Univerzitetu u Beogradu, kao i među studentima druge godine osnovnih studija koji su pohađali nastavu stranog jezika struke na Poljoprivrednom fakultetu Univerziteta u Beogradu. Predmet istraživanja rada podrazumeva ispitivanje stava predavača i studenata stranog jezika struke prema primeni audio-vizuelnih sredstava u nastavi. Cilj istraživanja sastoji se u sagledavanju (ne)postojanja preduslova za primenu audio-vizuelnih sredstava u nastavi stranih jezika struke. Rezultati istraživanja ukazuju na brojne prednosti primene audio-vizuelnih sredstava u nastavi stranog jezika struke i potrebu za njihovim korišćenjem i neophodnosti daljih istraživanja u ovoj oblasti. Kako predavači tako i studenti smatraju da je upotreba audio-vizuelnih sredstava u nastavi veoma korisna jer pre svega čini nastavu zanimljivijom a gradivo jasnijim, te na taj način motiviše studente za učenje stranog jezika struke.

Addressing Coherence in English-Arabic Subtitling by Amateur Afficionados
Sažetak The present article discusses coherence in terms of linguistic, cultural and polysemiotic channels. Subtitlers are often faced with major stumbling blo cks to get the message across in a cohesive and coherent fashion within the scope of various semiotic modalities, typically underpinning the construction of meaning. The present study is based on the data excerpted from the famous American sitcom, The Fres h Prince of Bel Air first aired in 1990, subtitled by two amateur subtitling aficionados and one MA translation student (who will be referred to as student subtitler) enrolled on Audiovisual Translation course at Al - Quds University for the school year 2014 /2015. The article employs a comparative analysis of the subtitles made by the amateur subtitlers and a trained subtitler. The article reveals that the student subtitler seems to be more aware of the specificities of subtitling and capable of rendering the accurate coherent semiotic meaning(s) of the uttered communication in the American sitcom than the other subtitlers. The article finally proposes a number of implications for the work of amateur subtitling aficionados and student subtitler and makes vario us recommendations that might assist in improving the translation quality.

Sažetak In cultural terms, wondering subjects like vagrants, homeless and migrants are often relegated to liminal social positions and neglected complete identities. However when novelists give them a voice, they can reconstruct and reinvent language and bring to the fore the tense reaction and challenge of the periphery to the monolithic sense of order and power that lies in mainstream lifestyles and canons. My paper focuses on three very diverse Anglophone fictional renditions of this complex scenario, in its postmodern, dystopian and diasporic articulations, respectively represented by Next (Christine Brooke-Rose 1998), Divided Kingdom (Rupert Thomson 2005) and Harare North (Brian Chikwava 2009) and sets out to analyse how these novels subvert the stereotypical vision of vagabonds and squatters and turn them into unusual tropes of alterity and diversity. Their fragmented, exuberant language uses constitute the backbone of these texts, which attempt to mirror or re-imagine the contemporary tangling and breaking of different viewpoints, stories and identities via innovative forms of eye-dialect, slang, and antilanguage. From a thematic perspective, therefore, these outcasts provokingly go beyond borders and vigorously express other voices by re-appropriating and re-shaping communicative codes and social practices.

Beauty as a reason for Life and an Ingredient of Life
Sažetak The paper deals with Colum McCann’s novel Let the Great World Spin (2009) by analysing the idea of beauty, emphasised at several points in the book. Our analysis revolves around the novel’s central event: a tightrope performance in the sky above New York City in 1974. The aim is to reveal how this unusual walk is understood by various characters: the crowd on the ground; the tightrope performer himself ; finally, Corrigan – a vice - addicted man who has spent most of his life helping people in need – and a group of grieving mothers, whose stories make up parts of a secondary narrative line, parallel to the walker’s. We first depict the reactions in the aud ience below the walker, realising that it is divided into people against and people for his successful ending. Then, we take the walker’s perspective and learn that his reasons for tightroping are summed up as “beauty”. We point out that his stunt is also described as “beautiful” by Corrigan, at the moment of his death. Implicitly, the reaction of the women who mourn their sons confirms Corrigan’s idea of beauty associated with the sky performance. After inferring that for both Corrigan and the walker life equals beauty in many ways, and that death is not necessarily void of beauty, we stress that beauty is not included in the reactions of the walker’s direct audience. We offer possible reasons for this absence and explain the impressions of the analysed cha racters as ordinary, special, or something in between.

Sažetak The paper deals with the context of blended learning at university level and its opportunities of raising students’ autonomy through Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). First of all, a theoretical framework is given by addressing the main concepts of applied linguistics dealt with in the paper. These concepts comprise learner autonomy, interdependent learning, CALL, and WebQuest. Next, a case study of a WebQuest project is presented. The project was a part of an online teacher-training course, a part of the University of Oregon Fall 2014 E-Teacher Scholarship Program, entitled “Building Teaching Skills through the Interactive Web”. The specific case that is discussed is the one of using WebQuests in a Business English class at B2-C1 level at the Faculty of Business Economics at Educons University in Sremska Kamenica, Serbia. The WebQuest gives the teacher an opportunity for creating an imaginary working environment which enables students’ responding to their peers, not the teacher. The basic hypothesis of the paper is that by using WebQuest interdependent learning, as a form of autonomous learning, is fostered. Throughout the project, using methods of class survey and interviews, the author comes to the conclusions that confirm the initial hypothesis i.e. the WebQuest actually fosters autonomy in language learning through interdependent learning.
