LEBANON AND ITS LINGUISTIC WANDERING
LEBANON AND ITS LINGUISTIC WANDERING
Sažetak With the present paper I would like to explore the modalities through which contemporary Lebanon’s linguistic variants are used, deliberately manipulated or unconsciously modified by their speakers, in a bid to express multifaceted cultural, political or merely individual egos. Lebanon is well known as a country of rich migration history: the major flows of migrants left for Australia, Canada, West Africa and Europe in the 19th and 20th century, where they mostly followed the settlement and housing patterns of their community members. On the other side, migration flows also occurred within the country, predominantly from the South to Beirut’s southern suburbs and its surrounding areas, since the Israeli Occupation (1978- 2000) and the chronic state neglect since the years of the French Mandate (1920-1943) had caused further impoverishment. The migration towards other countries is named hijra, which means “migration” in Arabic, whereas it is called nuzuh in the case of migration within the same country. Lebanon has been mostly home to Iraqi, Sudanese and Palestinian refugees from the 1948 Palestinian Nakba onwards, despite its refusal to become signatory to the 1951 Geneva Convention for Refugees, which classifies Lebanon just as a transit country for these forced migrants. Armenians and Kurds, wandering beings and victims of regional repression and violence par excellence, are also largely present in today’s Lebanon. The historical legacies of Lebanese transnationality have been engendering throughout the years interesting linguistic phenomena that are worth being delved into. The linguistic superstructure characterizing Lebanon, as a result, turns out extremely layered, hybrid and articulated, insofar as it reflects the wandering dimensionality of Lebanese society. The methodology used to unravel the way local trilingualism plays out draws on ethnographic data that have been collected by the author throughout four stays in Lebanon – periodically from 2005 to 2012. While aiming at analyzing the role of the performative Lebanese speaker in communicative phenomena of code switching and code mixing, the present research sheds light on the wandering essence of language itself, as a mirror of its inhabitants’ mobility. The ungraspable essence of migration gives birth to a highly complex formation of local languages and begs the question for still unexplored dynamics of linguistic affiliations to community, social class and ideological stance. By using an anthropological lens, an attempt to analyze Lebanon’s identity performances and the mobility stories of local speakers will be carried out.
LEKSIČKA VARIJACIJA EKVIVALENATA DIJALEKTALNOG VULGARIZMA MORTACCI U SRPSKOM PREVODU PAZOLINIJEVOG ROMANA ISKUSNI MOMCI
LEKSIČKA VARIJACIJA EKVIVALENATA DIJALEKTALNOG VULGARIZMA MORTACCI U SRPSKOM PREVODU PAZOLINIJEVOG ROMANA ISKUSNI MOMCI
LETTERS FROM EQUESTRIA
LETTERS FROM EQUESTRIA
Sažetak Media researchers have begun to move beyond studying violent media content effects and have, instead, showed greater interest in studying the relationship between prosocial media content and helping behavior. The present study contributes to this endeavor by both testing the role of empathy as a mediator of this relationship and by doing so within a relatively novel sample: Self-identified fans of a prosocial television show. Fans of the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic were compared to fans of Rooster Teeth (a studio producing online video content) in a cross-sectional study assessing their respective content consumption, a measure of affective empathy, and a self-report measure of prosocial behavior. For My Little Pony fans, unlike Rooster Teeth fans, emotional empathy mediated the relationship between media consumption and helping behavior. The results conceptually replicate and extend prior media and fandom research, offering both practical applications and potentially fruitful future directions for researchers.
LEXICAL PROBLEMS IN ARABIC-ENGLISH SUBTITLING
LEXICAL PROBLEMS IN ARABIC-ENGLISH SUBTITLING
Sažetak The present paper is designed to shed some light on the lexical problems in Arabic-English subtitling as illustrated by the translation output of 15 MA translation Arab students at Al-Quds University for the academic year 2010/2011. The data comprises an Egyptian movie entitled is-Safara fil-‘Imarah translated as „The Embassy is in the Building‟. The paper reveals that subtitling students are faced with several lexical problems that are attributed not only to the fact that Arabic and English are poles apart in terms of lexis, but they are also akin to the technical dimension, very much prominent in audiovisual translation, e.g. dubbing, voiceover, subtitling, etc. The study shows that the technical aspect has an impact on subtitler‟s lexical choice, and deleterious effect on communication. The study concludes with some pedagogical implications that will hopefully help subtitling students deal with the problems in question.
LEXICOGRAPHIC COMPETENCE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENTS
LEXICOGRAPHIC COMPETENCE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENTS
Sažetak Although it is often considered that successful use of a dictionary does not require any special knowledge or skills, research has shown that most users do not consult dictionaries efficiently or frequently enough. Users often avoid consulting dictionaries as much as they can, because they consider it to be a tedious and uninteresting task. Even when they consult a dictionary, most of them are not familiar with types of dictionaries, what type of dictionary would be the most useful one or how to assess the quality of a dictionary. A lot of information in a dictionary remains unnoticed and/or users fail to interpret it. These statements hold true for most users and for students of humanities or linguistics. Just like other users, students of linguistics fail to notice their own lack of user competence and are often unwilling to invest some time and effort to improve it. They may be willing to change this attitude only after being persuaded through a series of obvious examples that they fail to notice a lot of useful information that would allow them to avoid certain mistakes or to solve a problem. In this paper the authors will analyze responses to a questionnaire completed by students of English, Scandinavian languages and German at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, which show their attitude to using dictionaries, their habits and what they know about the dictionaries that are crucial for their studies and future careers. The authors will use this analysis to point to the necessary improvements in user competence these students are supposed to achieve and possible ways of achieving it.
LIMINAL INTERVENTIONS INTO LIFE AND ART
LIMINAL INTERVENTIONS INTO LIFE AND ART
Sažetak As a writer, the variety of genres used by Margaret Atwood is very extensive. Research studies often focus on her poetry and fiction. Her prose works, especially her Occasional Writings, offer interesting insights into life in general and Atwood's art in particular. In this sense, they provide excellent secondary sources for our readings of any text by Atwood. They occupy a liminal space which allows readers to make an interpretive foray into her writings. This is only one aspect of her Occasional pieces. It is my contention that Atwood's Occasional writings – speeches, interviews, reviews and essays – provide self-reflexive and meta-fictional insights through their continual erasure of generic conventions. These texts occupy interstitial positions in relation to other Atwood texts and intervene, negotiate and mediate in the overall process of interpretation. In doing so, they effectively interrogate the Romantic view of the writer as creator and also maintain a constant dialogue with the readers.

LINEARNO-PUNKTUALNA SIMULTANOST – OSVRT NA JEDAN TIP REČENICA SA TEMPORALNIM VEZNICIMA MEDAN/DOK I NÄR/KAD(A) U ŠVEDSKOM I SRPSKOM JEZIKU
Sažetak Između dveju korelativnih predikacija u rečeničnim kompleksima sa integrisanom vremenskom klauzom (=kompleksi modela S={SR+VR}) može se ostvariti temporalni međuodnos tipa linearnopunktualna simultanost, koji podrazumeva koincidiranje jedne imperfektivne i jedne perfektivne punktualne predikacije. Polazeći od linearno-punktualne simultanosti kao tipa temporalnog međuodnosa ostvarenog između korelativnih predikacija jednog broja švedskih i srpskih kompleksa modela S={SR+VR} sa temporalnim veznicima MEDAN odnosno DOK i NÄR odnosno KAD(A), u radu u prvom redu ukazujemo na jedan broj sintaksičko-semantičkih specifičnosti datih kompleksa obaju jezika, te ispitujemo uticaj pojednih sintaksičko-semantičkih odlika korelativih predikacija datih kompleksa na međusobnu komutabilnost temporalnih veznika MEDAN i NÄR odnosno DOK i KAD(A).

LIVING IN THE ‘IN-BETWEEN’
LIVING IN THE ‘IN-BETWEEN’
Sažetak Recent research in second language acquisition has put significant emphasis on the study of identity, seen as a dynamic, multiple, and context-bound phenomenon reproduced in social interaction. This goes hand in hand with the rise of interest in qualitative research methods, most notably narrative analysis. In this paper we aim to explore the intertwined relationship between identity, capital, and investment from the perspective of foreign language teachers teaching abroad (FLTTA). These teachers are a specific type of glomads, professionals who live and work abroad, frequently transgressing social, linguistic, and cultural spaces and borders. Our respondents were 4 French and 3 Croatian FLTTAs and we elicited their personal narratives via semi-structured interviews. We draw on the comprehensive model of investment proposed by Darvin and Norton (2015) to answer the following questions: 1) How do various ideologies structure identities and investment of FLTTAs? and 2) What are the forms of capital they invest in order to position themselves as FLTTAs? Our study confirmed that investment depends on factors that constitute various ideologies of space and language ideology which are often intertwined. When it comes to various forms of capital that our respondents possess and use to invest to position themselves as FLTTAs, their narratives predominantly point to linguistic capital, education, and their national or ethnic identity.
